Directions:   From Sainsburys / ASDA, travel uphill.  Pass the Sports Centre and continue to the next set of traffic lights.  Go left and follow the road down.  Turn right (at the Health and Social Care Building) and park.  You may join at the GDFAS reception desk or for a modest voluntary donation attend the lecture.  For dates, times, and topic, see the programme below.  Our lecturers are experts in their field, travelling from all over the UK to speak to us.

(Sept. 14 Mr Harry Fletcher
The Glasgow Boys, The Glasgow Girls, the Scottish Colourists and the French Connection
The 1880’s and 1890’s saw the rise of artistic colonies like The Glasgow Boys and the Glasgow Girls practising “Naturalism”. The Scottish Colourists had direct contact with French Post Impressionism and this lecture explores this connection.)      - Judged 'Outstanding'


Oct. 12 Mr Tim Stimson MA
Sir David Wilkie
During the 19th Century Wilkie was considered to be one of the great pioneers of Western Art. In figure painting his psychological penetration rivalled Renaissance artists with its exceptionally observant interaction of character and homely humour.

This lecture aims to show the diversity and impact of sculpture and reliefs on public buildings in urban spaces throughout Britain in a variety of media.

The History of Stained Glass seen through the Christmas Story
The art of stained glass reached its pinnacle in the windows of the 13th Century cathedrals with a revival in the 19th Century using lead line to define pictures or figures.


Jan . 11 Mr David Phillips
Who Says? Can we Trust the Experts on good and bad in Art?
This lecture reviews scandalous episodes and disagreements facing critics and experts regarding the authenticity of works of art. However, such minefields need not deter us from making artistic judgements.

Shafts of Light: The Phenomenon of Mining Art

Mining and professional artists alike have been mesmerized by the visual impact of coalmining and have produced art of the highest quality the like of which is found in to other industry.

Travel Broadens the Mind: Artists and their Travels from Van Eyck to Gaugin
This lecture will explore the lure of travel and its impact upon the work of artists from the Renaissance to the 19th Century.

Embroidered with Woodbine and Eglantine
Elizabethan Textile Furnishings
Textiles provided the interiors of 16th Century aristocratic houses with colour, glamour, texture and symbolism. In this lecture we look at the designs, techniques, uses and the subject matter with its hidden messages.

May 9 Mrs Geri Parlby MA
Angels, Saints and Virgins –
The extraordinary Art of the Hispanic Andes
Angels with muskets, Virgin Maries shaped like mountains and saints of all shapes and sizes. When the Spanish tried to Christianise the Andeans they found that the natives would make the religious art distinctly their own.


June 13 Mrs Helen McCabe BA (Hons)
Houses and Gardens of the Bordeaux Region
Walnut groves in the Perigord, the vineyards around Bordeaux and the banks of the River Dordogne are the setting for the chateaux manoirs and gardens of this region.
